Like other
forms of entertainment, games come in a variety
of different genres to suit the tastes of many
different people. The most common genres are detailed
below, with some popular examples of games in
those genres. These games often put you in the
form of a soldier, with some task that involves
you infiltrating an enemy’s base or fighting off
swarms of enemies to defend someone or something.
These games are often violent and routinely have
Teen or Mature ratings. The gamer must have sharp
reflexes and good mastery of the controller to
successfully play these games. A sub genre of
this is the first person shooter, which allows
the player to move around and see the world through
the eyes of their character, as if they were there.
These games are more often found on the Xbox 360
and PlayStation 3. More |

With the
development of new technology that allowed games
to render more realistic graphics, a rise in the
number of games depicting realistic blood and
violence occurred. After the release of controversial
games such as Mortal Kombat and Night Trap, pressure
from parents and watchdog groups prompted the
video game industry to create the Entertainment
Software Rating Board (ESRB), a self regulatory
group that examines and supplies ratings and content
warnings for all games published in North America.
Beyond the game’s rating which falls under a few
broad categories and is displayed prominently
on the front of all game cases, there are additional
content descriptions on the back of the game case,
detailing specific scenarios that appear at least
once in the game. Armed with this information,
parents can choose games suitable for their children
to play. Below are the definitions of the ratings
by the ESRB, and some of the additional content
markers. More |
