Like other forms of entertainment, games come in a variety of different genres to suit the tastes of many different people. The most common genres are detailed below, with some popular examples of games in those genres.These games often put you in the form of a soldier, with some task that involves you infiltrating an enemy’s base or fighting off swarms of enemies to defend someone or something. These games are often violent and routinely have Teen or Mature ratings. The gamer must have sharp reflexes and good mastery of the controller to successfully play these games. A sub genre of this is the first person shooter, which allows the player to move around and see the world through the eyes of their character, as if they were there. With the development of new technology that allowed games to render more realistic graphics, a rise in the number of games depicting realistic blood and violence occurred. After the release of controversial games such as Mortal Kombat and Night Trap, pressure from parents and watchdog groups prompted the video game industry to create the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), a self regulatory group that examines and supplies ratings and content warnings for all games published in North America. Beyond the game’s rating which falls under a few broad categories and is displayed prominently on the front of all game cases, there are additional content descriptions on the back of the game case, detailing specific scenarios that appear at least once in the game.
